FLL Overview
FIRST LEGO League (FLL®) challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. During the FLL® season, teams will choose and solve a real-world water problem in the Project. They will also build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under FLL’s signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.

FLL Global Challenge 2017 – Hydro Dynamics
On your mark, get set, flow!
Drink in the 2017/2018 HYDRO DYNAMICSSM season and learn all about water – how we find, transport, use, or dispose of it. In the 2017/2018 FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge, students age 9 to 16* from 80 countries will make a splash with HYDRO DYNAMICS. What might become possible when we understand what happens to our water?

The North Carolina FLL season runs from September through December. Cost the program is $75. The fee can be paid with check or online via Pay4Schools.

Work and Schedule Expectations
The LEGO Robotics season is quite short with a heavy emphasis on work in September-November. If the team does well at the Regional tournament there is additional work in December and January.

Team members are expected to commit 3-4 hours a week after school and on weekends depending on when the team schedules the weekly meetings, plus 1-2 hours of their own time for research and idea generation. The weekend time increases in November for final competition prep.

Gracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. They avoid treating anyone like losers. No chest thumping tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended.

Coopertition® produces innovation. At FIRST, Coopertition is displaying unqualified kindness and respect in the face of fierce competition. Coopertition is founded on the concept and a philosophy that teams can and should help and cooperate with each other even as they compete. Coopertition involves learning from teammates. It is teaching teammates. It is learning from Mentors. And it is managing and being managed. Coopertition means competing always, but assisting and enabling others when you can.

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) Coaches’ Promise
The students come first. My role as a Coach is to inspire my team and help them get excited about science, technology, engineering, and math. This means that I will step in to guide and support them when they need it, but I will make sure my team’s robot, Project, and Core Values materials are the work of team members.
The students do the work. Adults may teach my team new skills, handle logistics for the team, ask questions to get team members thinking, and remind them of the FLL rules. Team members are the only ones who decide on strategy, build, program, research, choose a problem and innovative solution, and present at a tournament.
I am responsible for reading and relaying all aspects of FLL guidelines and rules to my team, other Coaches, Volunteers, and parents.
I will encourage my team members, other Coaches, Volunteers, parents, and team supporters to develop and practice a set of FLL Core Values that reflects the FIRST goal to change culture in a positive way by inspiring others through our team’s actions and words.
